EU greener appliance meeting summarised
A plan to merge draft EU directives on greening electronics design and setting minimum energy efficiency standards for appliances yielded a mixed reception at a stakeholder consultation meeting last month, according to the European Commission. The move would weld together the unpopular EEE proposal with the similarly titled EER initiative (EED 07/11/02). The Commission's account of the meeting relates calls from industry to "maximise self-regulatory undertakings" in achieving the draft laws' aims, while some NGOs pressed for a demerger. A formal proposal may emerge early next year. See news update and further details.
