States condemned over EU green law adoption
Belgium and Luxembourg were today condemned by the European court of justice for failing to implement EU environmental laws. Both judgements are in line with legal opinions delivered by court advisers. The case against Belgium concerned failures to comply with the 1992 habitats directive in the Brussels region (EED 12/09/02). Luxembourg is the latest in a long line of EU states to be condemned for failing to properly implement 1996 rules on safeguarding and cleaning up old stocks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (EED 25/06/02). See judgements in cases C-324/01 (Belgium) and C-174/01 (Luxembourg).
