Infringements of EU fisheries rules up in 2001
The European Commission has sought to underline the need for major reform of EU fisheries policy with the release yesterday of a second annual report on infringement cases showing these increased by 12% in 2001. Almost half related to unlawful fishing. The number of penalties imposed "does not mirror the level of compliance with the rules" and checks are still "inadequate" the Commission said. The EU executive published proposals to reform the bloc's common fisheries policy this spring (EED 28/05/02). See press release.
