Yet another delay for EU energy tax deal
Protracted talks among finance ministers over savings taxes put paid to the prospect of agreeing an EU energy taxation framework in Brussels last night. The delay prevented a deal on the energy tax, where Germany is holding out for tighter rules on taxing diesel for road haulage (EED 05/12/02). This means ministers have failed to agree on the package by the end-of-year deadline set by heads of government. Both issues will now be tackled at the next council meeting on January 21 under the Greek EU presidency. See council minutes.
