Stop-go for European GM crop tests
Switzerland's first ever genetically modified (GM) crop field trial finally looks set to proceed after the country's environment agency reversed an initial decision to block the project (EED 20/11/01). The agency had been directed to reconsider its position by the Swiss environment ministry. In Belgium, meanwhile, trade association Belgobiotech announced a halt on all new GM crop field trials "to give the government the opportunity" to tackle "too great a confusion in rules, an incoherent policy, and even hostility towards the biotechnology sector in Belgium" (EED 02/05/02).
