EU bans "navy blue" textile dye
The EU today announced a ban on an azo dye used to colour textile and leather products navy blue. The chemical, known simply as "navy blue", joins a longer list of azo dyes due to be outlawed later in the year under an amendment of the chemicals' marketing and use directive adopted last year (EED 12/09/02). Today's move was endorsed by all 15 EU member states after risk assessments showed the chromate content of the dye was toxic to aquatic organisms. See navy blue directive.
