EU's internal market "benefits environment"
A cleaner environment is one of several achievements of the EU's decade-old internal market programme of free trade within the bloc, according to a report issued by the European Commission. A harmonised approach to environmental policy has produced cuts in motor vehicle emissions, and cleaner water and air. The report notes that "there are still many serious environmental challenges ahead". It adds that poor transposition of EU legislation is damaging the effective functioning of the internal market. Infringement of environmental laws is particularly serious (EED 07/10/02). See press release and report.
