France closes dirty incinerators' chapter

French environment minister Roselyne Bachelot has announced that all waste incinerators breaching EU standards for dioxin emissions have now been closed. The closure programme was stepped up in October after France transposed the 2000 waste incineration directive (EED 07/10/02). Ms Bachelot had made the refurbishing or shutdown of municipal waste incinerators emitting illegal levels of dioxins a priority, setting an end-2002 deadline for completing the task (EED 13/09/02). Last May, 36 dirty incinerators were still in service. Two have been brought up to standard, 31 closed and three shut down pending refurbishment. See press release.
