German industry agrees pack deposits plan
German drinks packagers and retailers have agreed an approach to recycling one-way bottles and cans newly subject to deposits that should result in a fully operational system by a government deadline of 1 October. Industry association Agvu said on Friday it was adopting an "easy and cost-effective" approach, entailing simply an indication on product labelling of containers subject to deposits. Around 60,000 take-back machines are now expected to be installed by retailers by the autumn. See press release.
