Oil tanker on thick ice in the Baltic
The Stemnitsa oil tanker is sailing through thick ice in the Gulf of Finland after loading 110,000 tonnes of oil in the Russian port of Primorsk, despite Finnish authorities' attempts to stop it (EED 04/02/03). Its sister ship Nounou is also reported to be heading for Primorsk. Finnish prime minister Paavo Lipponen was to hold discussions with his Russian counterpart Mikael Kasyanova today. Environmental groups are protesting vehemently. WWF Finland has urged the International maritime organisation (IMO) to protect the Baltic Sea from shipments of hazardous cargo.
