Pledge to tackle UK's "throwaway culture"
UK environment minister Margaret Beckett yesterday pledged to launch a strategy aimed at making the country's consumption patterns more sustainable and cutting waste. Speaking at a conference organised by the Guardian newspaper, Ms Beckett said that the outlines of a national plan should be drafted by the summer. Legislative powers would be used, if necessary, to force firms to come on board, she added. The announcement comes after months of speculation on how the UK should deal with its burgeoning waste mountain, some 80% of which goes to landfill (EED 24/10/02). See article.
