Next steps in EU soil strategy outlined
The European Commission has given details of ongoing preparations for an EU soil protection strategy at a workshop in Brussels this week. An advisory forum is to be launched next month, officials said, followed by five technical working groups focusing on the priority issues of monitoring, research, organic content, contamination and erosion identified in a communication issued last year (EED 19/04/02). A draft directive on soil monitoring is now expected to emerge in June 2004. Applications to join the advisory forum and working groups are being sought. See Commission's soil strategy pages.
