EIB releases first ever environment report
The European investment bank has published its first ever environment report. Released alongside its annual review of activities yesterday, the report is at least partly a response to persistent criticism from NGOs in accession countries alleging poor environmental oversight of loans for major infrastructure projects there. The bank has a self-imposed goal to spend between a quarter and a third of its funds on projects with environmental objectives. In 2001-2002 it disbursed €17.9bn for environmental purposes, though this is a wide definition that includes some types of road building. See EIB review site.
