London gets ready for congestion charging
The world's largest urban congestion charging scheme will kick off in London on Monday. The extent of its success will be closely analysed by the rest of the EU, as the bloc awaits a draft directive on transport infrastructure charging, due later this year. The £5 (€7.5) daily charge will apply to traffic entering a central area (20.5 km square) of the city between 7am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday. Vehicles powered by green fuels are among those exempt from the charge. See congestion charging web pages.
