Flame retardant controls confirmed

The EU's official journal has published the final text of a new directive phasing out the brominated flame retardants penta and octabromodiphenyl ether by 15 August next year. The marketing and use ban was settled through conciliation last year (EED 10/12/02). The fate of a third member of the group of chemicals, deca, is much more controversial and hangs on extra research being carried out to supplement a first risk assessment made last year (EED 18/11/02). See directive text.
