Sweden proposes EU curbs on DEHP
Environmental group Healthcare without harm (HCWC) has welcomed a formal proposal by Sweden for EU controls on the phthalate plasticiser DEHP. They would include an immediate ban on its use in medical devices for newborn babies and restrictions in some other applications. Phthalate manufacturers objected strongly to the draft recommendations last autumn (EED 28/11/02). In a related development, the EU's emergency ban on use of phthalates in toys intended to be mouthed by under-threes has been renewed for a thirteenth three-month period. See HCWC press release, draft DEHP risk reduction strategy, and EU phthalate ban renewal.
