New EU environment agency chief named

Jacqueline McGlade, a British-Canadian environmental scientist, has been named as the next executive director of the European environment agency. Professor McGlade will take over in June from Gordon McInnes, who has been interim director since the agency's first chief, Domingo Jiménez Beltrán, retired in May 2002. She has extensive scientific experience, most recently as a professor in environmental informatics at University College London. Professor McGlade was one of four candidates shortlisted after the European Commission was forced to advertise for the post a second time (EED 18/03/02). See press release.
