Cstee criticises benzene risk assessment
The EU's top scientific toxicology committee (Cstee) has told risk assessors to think again after they concluded no extra curbs on atmospheric emissions of benzene were necessary beyond those planned or already in place. In a strongly worded opinion released this week, the committee says it is "unacceptable" that the EU's risk assessment on the carcinogen, led by German authorities, contains no data to assess the effect of airborne benzene on terrestrial organisms. Statements in the assessment on the risk of ozone formation were also "controversial", it added. See Cstee benzene opinion.
