UN rules on industrial accidents finalised
Negotiations on a new UN protocol on civil liability for damage to transboundary waters caused by industrial accidents involving hazardous substances have been successfully concluded, the UN economic commission for Europe (UN/ECE) said on Friday. Work on the protocol started after the Baia Mare toxic mine spillage in Romania in 2000 (EED 04/07/01). The protocol is due to be formally adopted at a pan-European ministerial conference in Kiev in May. See press release.
