French green transport plan gets EU nod
The European Commission today announced approval of a French plan to spend €100m over five years on cutting greenhouse gas emissions from its transport system. The aid will go towards reviewing transport organisation, developing cleaner vehicles and energy savings for inland waterway transport. Although some of the measures could be regarded as state aid, the Commission said, it did not contravene the common market as it had "environmental objectives" and was aimed at the development of "combined transport and modal transfer operations which are of common interest".
