EU implements Rotterdam convention
A new EU regulation to implement the United Nations' Rotterdam convention on imports and exports of hazardous chemicals entered into force today after publication in the EU's official journal yesterday. The regulation's content was settled politically last year, after the council of ministers and European parliament agreed to switch its legal base from the trade to the environment articles of the EU treaty (ED 24/10/02). Also yesterday, the EU approved the convention itself, a formal step that contributes to the agreement's global entry into force.
