Italy blocks EU energy tax deal
Italy was confirmed as the latest EU member state to hold up agreement on an energy taxation framework for the bloc, when it exercised its veto over draft legislation during a meeting of finance ministers in Brussels last Friday. Italian finance minister Giulio Tremonti said Rome wanted a better deal on diesel from truckers already under pressure because of difficulties on transalpine freight routes (EED 19/02/03). Previous blockers have included, at various times, Spain, Ireland, the UK, France and Germany. The issue will be revisited by ministers on 19 March. See Ecofin council minutes.
