MEPs confirm EU biofuels target climbdown
The European parliament has backed its energy committee's decision not to push the council of ministers into a conciliation battle in a bid to win mandatory EU targets for increasing biofuel use in road transport (EED 24/02/03). Voting in plenary session in Strasbourg today, MEPs called instead for tougher monitoring of member state attempts to reach non-binding indicative targets. Nevertheless, farming association Copa-Cogeca applauded the vote as an "extremely important step" in boosting biofuel production.
