Norway in 'biggest ever' waste action

Environmental officials are spot-checking more than 500 Norwegian companies for hazardous waste in the biggest action of its kind to date, the state pollution control agency (SFT) has said. Three categories of small and medium-sized businesses known for poor records of compliance with waste disposal regulations have been targeted: mechanical workshops (especially boat yards and garages), dry cleaners and laundries, and graphics firms. About 50,000 tonnes of special waste, amounting to 8% of the total generated in Norway, are unaccounted for each year (EED 27/06/02). See press release.
