Madrid in breach of air pollution limits
Spanish NGO Ecologists in action has asked the Madrid environmental prosecutor to act against the city council for failing to adopt measures to ensure satisfactory air quality in line with a 1999 EU directive and a Spanish implementing law passed last year (EED 23/10/02). The laws set limits on sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, fine particles and lead. According to data supplied by the city council, average levels of nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter and NOx were at or above permitted levels last year. See Ecologists in action.
