EU sulphur-free fuel law in force
A European directive limiting the amount of sulphur allowed in road fuels to 10 ppm from 2009 became law earlier this month when it was published in the official journal. The law requires that the petrol and diesel, generally accepted to be "sulphur-free", be made available throughout the EU by 2005. In the meantime, member states are encouraged to introduce incentives to speed up the introduction of the fuels. The German government has already done this to clean up exhaust emissions and encourage engineering developments to cut pollution from vehicles (EED 02/11/01). See directive.
