Britain pressed over nuclear discharges
Greenpeace has urged the UK government to commit to early closure of all Britain's Magnox nuclear power stations before a ministerial conference under the Ospar marine protection convention is held in June. A preparatory meeting for the conference is currently underway in Berlin (EED 24/03/03). In a letter to environment minister Michael Meacher, the group warns that the UK is failing to cut radioactive discharges as required under a 1998 Ospar agreement. Discharges from the Sellafield nuclear plant have risen since 1998 and could double without the power stations' closure, Greenpeace says. See letter.
