Precautionary electrosmog rules debated
The European Commission has published papers from an expert conference held in February to evaluate the need and potential for applying the precautionary principle to the control of non-ionising (electromagnetic) radiation. Current EU advisory limits were set in 1999, and further risk assessment work is continuing under the auspices of the World health organisation. Experts from a range of backgrounds spoke at the conference. Representatives of the mobile phone, electrical equipment and power industries disputed the need for a further, precaution-based tightening of EU controls. See conference papers.
