EU scientists back away from lead shot ban
There is no need for an EU ban on lead shot, the scientific committee on toxicology, ecotoxicology and the environment has concluded in an opinion released yesterday. The committee was consulted by the European Commission after a report found that shot was the biggest source of lead entering the environment. The scientists back the approach taken in the UK, where lead shot is banned over wetlands and protected nature areas. The Netherlands, Spain and Nordic countries also have restrictions on lead shot (EED 28/08/01). See Cstee opinion and the earlier lead report.
