EU green transport initiatives announced
Short sea shipping in Europe is to be boosted under a new 14-point European Commission action plan. The plan includes a directive proposal to create a standard-size European "intermodal loading unit" for transporting cargo. Meanwhile, the council of ministers yesterday released a provisional first-reading agreement on the Marco Polo programme to encourage a shift in transport modes. The accord sets aside €75m for projects between 2003 and 2006. The plan will soon return to the European parliament, which has demanded an extra €40m (EED 04/10/02).
