French plan on PCB removal published
The French government has finally published a plan for eliminating persistent polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and related PCTs from equipment such as electrical transformers. The country was condemned last year by the European court of justice for failing to meet a 1999 EU legal deadline for making an inventory of PCBs and PCTs in equipment over 5 cubic decimetres, together with a plan for their disposal (EED 07/06/02). Spurred by the threat of court action, the government stepped up pressure on municipalities to collect the information required under EU law (EED 23/02/01).
