Ban urged on use of wood tar in cosmetics
Wood tar and derivative products are toxic and should not be used in cosmetic products, the EU's scientific committee on cosmetic and non-food products has declared in an opinion for the European Commission. The opinion was sought after an unknown EU member state requested that wood tar be added to the list of banned substances on the 1976 cosmetics directive. The chemically similar coal tar products are already prohibited. EU cosmetics industry body Colipa was unable to comment on the opinion today. See SCCNFP opinion.
