Swedes fine-tune Natura 2000 list
An additional 54 sites have been added to Sweden's list of sites nominated for the EU's Natura 2000 network, the environment ministry announced today. Because a number of separate sites have been merged, the total number of sites nominated for protection remains the same at 3,910. Of these, 3,474 are nominated under the habitats directive and 47 under the wild birds directive, a ministry spokeswoman told ENDS Europe DAILY. The changes were made in accordance with European Commission suggestions, following its review of Sweden's proposals submitted last year (EED 28/01/02). See press release.
