Commission mulls tourism sustainability
The European Commission's enterprise directorate has issued outline proposals for working towards sustainability in European tourism. After taking account of stakeholder reactions it plans to issue a formal communication in November. The draft suggests that little concrete will emerge: "the right pathway", it says, is "reinforcing the existing framework" of general policies, while introducing a few tourism-specific measures "to fill gaps". The directorate's proposals follow hard on the heels of publication of the first EU tourism ecolabel criteria. See sustainable tourism consultation, and EU tourism ecolabel criteria.
