Power firms urged to cut CO2 emissions
Environmental group WWF has challenged European power firms to halve their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2020 through new technologies and better energy efficiency. The sector produces 37% of all CO2 emissions in the EU, notes the NGO, giving it a crucial role in preventing global warming. WWF simultaneously praised eight named "power pioneers", electricity generators or retailers which, it says, have "shown leadership in areas such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, a switch away from coal, and national policy".
