Norwegian violations "numerous but minor"
About 80% of companies monitored by Norway's pollution control authority (SFT) between 1997 and 2000 were found to be in breach of at least one environmental regulation, the national statistics office (SSB) reports. The figure confirms previous trends, representing "a clear increase in [breaches of] environmental regulations throughout the nineties", SSB said in a statement (EED 07/06/99). Since 1992, most infractions have been relatively minor, and more than 40% were reported voluntarily by the companies themselves. SFT said it considered legal sanctions in only 3% of cases.
