EU anti-fouling paint ban enters force
An EU regulation prohibiting application of organotin anti-fouling paints to ship hulls and oil rigs took effect on Friday following publication in the bloc's official journal. Agreed earlier this year (EED 20/02/03), the ban will apply from July to ships and marine platforms registered in or operated by EU states. It will extend to vessels flying other flags when a similar agreement under the International maritime organisation enters force. From 2008 all ships will have to remove or seal any remaining organotin coatings, though platforms built before this year are exempt. See EU regulation.
