Concern over medicines polluting water
EU-sponsored research carried out in France has highlighted concerns about the impact of medicines ending up in rivers after being used or discarded by humans. Cemegref carried out tests on six types of drugs found in French, Swiss, Greek and Italian water treatment plants, studying their effect on marine organisms. It found that concentrations were several times lower than that required to affect functions such as reproduction. However, the authors warn that the substances could have a long-term impact through accumulation or interaction with other chemicals. See press release.
