Egypt blunts US drive on EU's biotech blockade
Egypt has withdrawn support for America's push to overturn the EU moratorium on genetically modified (GM) product approvals, it emerged today. The about-turn deals a public relations blow to the initiative just two weeks after its launch (EED 13/05/03). Egypt was the only one of three co-complainants in Africa, which is a key political battleground in the dispute (EED 23/05/03). In a letter to European consumers' association Beuc, Egypt's EU ambassador says the decision follows "a thorough review" of EU policy. See Friends of the Earth Europe press release and the letter.
