Coalition demands global fuel sulphur cuts
An international coalition of regulators, academics and vehicle manufacturers has called on world governments to virtually eliminate sulphur in fuels, calling it the "lead of the new century". The statement builds on an anti-sulphur memorandum issued by the group a year ago (EED 08/13/02). Although the EU, USA and Japan have legislated to virtually eliminate sulphur from road fuels by the end of the decade, the rest of the world has not followed suit. Even in the leading countries, limits on fuels used in non-road vehicles remain relatively lax (EED 12/02/03). See press release.
