Portugal "illegally subsidising incineration"
An environmental group has accused Portugal of undermining efforts to increase waste recycling by subsidising municipal waste incineration in breach of European rules. In a letter to the European Commission, Quercus complains that Portuguese law allows all energy produced by incinerators to be sold as renewable energy at a premium rate. In contrast, it notes that the EU's 2001 renewable energy directive allows only energy recovered from the biodegradable portion of municipal waste to be counted towards targets for boosting renewables. See press release and the complaint.
