Flexible mechanisms "key to climate strategies"
Austria and Ireland should make wider use of international flexible mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to two country reviews by the International energy agency (IEA). Both countries are falling behind their Kyoto protocol targets (EED 22/08/02). Ireland should urgently implement measures included in its 2000 climate change strategy (EED 03/11/00) and supplement them with flexible mechanisms, the IEA says. Austria's strategy is praised, especially its support scheme for renewable energy, but more emphasis on flexible mechanisms is also recommended. See press releases on Ireland and Austria.
