NRW Greens swallow hard to stay in power
The Green party has been forced to junk much of its environmental policy platform in order to keep its role in the coalition government of North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW), Germany's most populous state, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported on Friday. In particular, the majority Social Democrats have secured an agreement to continued subsidies for coal mining until 2012, in direct contradiction to the Greens' policy at federal level (EED 28/05/03). The minority party also accepted more flights at Düsseldorf airport and further motorway building. See article.
