Berlusconi backs "nimby" radwaste policy
Italy's prime minister and EU president Silvio Berlusconi has upset environmentalists with another ironic comment days after his infamous debut in the European parliament. Evoking the "not in my back yard" principle, Mr Berlusconi rejected suggestions that a national radioactive waste disposal facility be sited in Sardinia, where he owns several properties. The idea had been proposed by the left "because it would bring radioactive waste into my home", he told a meeting. An outraged Green party said that, on this basis, the repository would be off-limits in several other Italian regions. See Italian Green party.
