Italy's approach to special waste rapped
The Italian court of auditors has issued a damning report on the country's management of industrial and commercial hazardous waste. Lack of strategic planning by local and national authorities, late implementation of EU rules and insufficient sanctions against illicit activities are all symptoms of a "wait-and-see" culture, it says. Too few companies have taken up environmental management schemes, and waste production continues to rise fast. Only 30% of special waste is recovered and illegal waste trafficking is growing (EED 04/02/03). See press release and report.
