Italy "will bear brunt of Reach" rules
Italy's economy will be worse hit than any other by the EU's new chemicals policy, Reach, industry association Federchimica has warned. Costs will be 20-50% higher than the EU average because Italian chemical producers are relatively small and tend to produce specialist chemicals. Both these factors will increase the impacts on them and their downstream users such as furniture, leather, clothing and small machinery manufacturers (EED 13/11/02). Federchimica claims that up to 150,000 Italian firms will be affected, leading to the loss of €25bn manufacturing turnover and 650,000 jobs. See press release.
