Belgium risking fines over tacit consents
The European Commission has warned Belgium of renewed court action over its authorities' practice of issuing tacit consents for industrial operations under various pieces of EU environment legislation. If condemned by the European court of justice the government would be liable to daily fines, since the Commission has already won a judgement against it over the issue (EED 14/06/01). According to the Commission the region of Flanders still provides tacit consents under legislation such as the framework waste, groundwater and dangerous substances directives.
