Structural funds "have boosted sustainability"
Europe's "objective 1" structural funds made a big contribution to sustainable development and environmental improvement in EU's poorest countries in the period 1994-99, according to an official review. Published by the European Commission today, it says the most significant benefit has been the creation of basic environmental infrastructure in Spain, Portugal and Greece, particularly water supply, drainage and treatment. But it also concludes that environmental projects suffer the longest delays and are most prone to budget inflation. See Commission press release and the report.
