Call for EU backing for organic agriculture
A report commissioned by France's agriculture ministry has urged EU harmonisation of controls and subsidies for organic farming, possibly backed by a European standard lable for the sector. France should press for and be actively involved in the drafting of a European action plan promoting organic production, argues the report's author, French MP, Martial Saddier. The government is planning to launch a new organic farming policy this autumn. Currently just 1.4% of French farmland is managed organically. See report web page.
