Commission takes action over Erika laws
The European Commission has announced legal action against ten EU countries alleging a failure to implement anti-oil slick legislation just days after the passing of the transposition deadline. All member states except Denmark, Spain, France, Germany and the UK failed to notify by 22 July adoption of the new "Erika" rules on ship inspections, surveys and port state control, the Commission said. "We could have avoided the Prestige disaster had these key measures been in force earlier, as the Commission proposed," transport commissioner Loyola de Palacio said. See press release.
